The Netball World Cup, which will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, next year, will feature sixteen teams. The netball governing body confirmed this during the draw last week in East London.
Netball’s world leaders are South Africa, Australia, England, Jamaica, Uganda, and New Zealand. They came in without having to compete for their spots because they are among the best teams in the world.
The 2023 Netball World Cup draw was a second confirmation that the tournament would be held in Africa for the first time in history, as well as the start of South Africa’s hard work.
The SPAR Proteas (South Africa) are drawn in Group C alongside Jamaica, Wales, and Sri Lanka. South Africans can breathe a sigh of relief after being drawn with two countries below them in the world netball rankings.
Norma Plummer’s monumental task of preparing the national team to perform well at home has begun. Netball South Africa hired Plummer last month following the poor performance of the SPAR Proteas under Dorette Badenhorst at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Cecilia Molokwane, President of Netball South Africa, welcomed the team draws and wished them well.
“The team draw is very satisfying. They have been drawn correctly. We want to wish all the teams the best as they prepare to come to the Netball World Cup,” Molokwane said after the draw in East London.
“Our players are working very hard in the camp because they want to close the tournament successfully.”
Ticket outlets are selling Netball World Cup 2023 tickets. The tournament will take place next year from the end of July to the first week of August.
