On Sunday, February 5, four men held a 68-year-old Addo farmer and his wife (65) at gunpoint during a robbery. Two of these individuals were dressed in police uniforms, the other in casual attire, the other in a police shirt and jeans.
Around 4:30pm, the four suspects allegedly came at the farm near Selborne and rang the doorbell. The farmer was informed when he stepped outside that the person with them was a suspect who had taken cables from the farm. They were requested to go with the farmer to a canal check on his land. One suspect reportedly trailed behind while the others moved along, according to police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu.
The report said that the suspect entered the home, confronted the woman with a gun, and demanded money and weapons. The farmer who was allegedly assaulted joined the remaining suspects as they headed back to the orchards.
The couple was restrained and locked in a room while the residence was searched. In total, 100 rounds of specialist ammunition in various calibres, two firearms (9mm and.38 revolver), eight hunting rifles, two firearms, a laptop, a set of binoculars, and a mobile phone were stolen. The complainant’s Toyota Fortuner, which was subsequently located abandoned around 20km away, was used by the suspects to flee. The guns are estimated to be worth R250 000.
A house robbery is being investigated. Police are cautioning residents to be on the lookout for criminals posing as police officers. Each police officer has a name badge and identification card with them at all times. You have the right, as a civilian, to demand identification before letting anyone onto your property.
