In the Mqanduli villages, both sports and Christian believers celebrated major events last week. The youth of Mqanduli congregated in Lower Ngqungqu over the busy Easter weekend to watch football and netball matches in the inaugural Mell’z Tournament, organised by Meleza Jubase.

Even though it was the first time Meleza had arranged a significant sporting event in the Mqanduli region, practically everything went smoothly and according to schedule with the exception of the volleyball teams. Since it is not a frequently played sport in rural regions, teams that expressed interest prior to the tournament date did not attend.

From Easter Friday through last Sunday, games involving more than 15 football and netball teams were played at the Ngqungqu sports field. After defeating Glamour Boys FC 2-0 in the final match, Amavarara FC was awarded the football trophy.

Hungry Lion won the netball final after defeating Gogozoyo by a score of 17-10. In addition to the trophies, the winning teams were presented with amazing prizes. A kit including balls and a total of R10 000 were given to the Amavarara.

The Glamour Boys were given a kit and five R5 000. The second-place netball team earned a trophy as well as a kit. Few teams were able to attend the tournament day, hence there was no money for them.

Meleza acknowledged her happiness and vowed that the competition would be significantly better the next year in an interview with this publication earlier this week.

“The tournament went quite well. I am grateful to the Mqanduli residents who attended the tournament. No issue existed until the very end. We’ll repeat it the following year. Next year, we will make up for anything we did not do well this year. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our tournament,” Meleza remarked following the event.
