Broos still hopes to lead Bafana Bafana to Afcon

Hugo Broos mentioned two major things after arriving in South Africa last year to take over as coach of the national football team: taking Bafana Bafana to Qatar and the Africa Cup of Nations.

“I did not come here just to get some money for the weekend. I’d like to win the Afcon Cup and lead my team to the World Cup,” these were his words last year.

He repeated them last week, but despite his promising start, the national team was unable to qualify for the Afcon and Qatar. He is currently preparing Bafana Bafana for an Afcon qualifier against Liberia.

South Africa played two friendly matches last week. The goal is to look at the players who will be on the field next year. What is commendable is that Bafana beat Mozambique 2-1 before drawing 1-1 with Angola at the Mbombela Stadium.

Broos was ecstatic after the first game because his players had defeated their opponents and played well. But things were different in the second game, as Angola gave them a run for their money.

Prior to these matches in Mpumalanga, Bafana Bafana defeated Sierra Leone and Botswana. “Today’s results are not disappointing,” said Broos following the game.

“Yes, I want us to win every game, but what we expected happened. We did not play as well as we did against Mozambique because some of our players complained about being tired.

“We brought in new players in the hopes of improving our performance, but that did not happen. The good news is that we were not defeated by Angola, who played well,” Broos expressed his satisfaction with the results he obtained.

“I am pleased with the results of our efforts. The teams we played with play like Liberia. The team has been tested, and we have demonstrated that we are capable of participating in the next Afcon,” Broos concluded. South Africa will play Liberia in March of the following year.
