African National Congress (ANC) comrade, Nkosifikile Nophemba Gqomo (48), who died on Monday this week, will be remembered as someone who had great communication skills. He had the ability to mobilise people within the party, as he was articulate and a people person, according to the ANC.
The organisation said the sudden death of their comrade was shocking and unexpected.
The ANC spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Gift Ngqondi, said they are following Gqomo’s footsteps as he was an example.
“We are crying because we loved Nophemba, and we are also mourning with the community that loved him including his country that loved him. We owe you, Nophemba, for giving up everything and working for the nation,” said Ngqondi.
Gqomo, a native of Qumbu, joined and fought in the struggle in the 80s. He was part of the student organisation, the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in the former Transkei where he worked tirelessly, fighting for freedom.
He also demonstrated his excellent communication skills at the ANC Youth League provincial executive committee, where he was elected as the ANCYL spokesperson.
Gqomo was part of the Members of the Mayoral Committee (MAYCO) in the OR Tambo District Municipality after the November 2021 local government elections. He got elected as the ANC Regional Treasurer in OR Tambo at its regional conference in December 2021.
The ANC also conveyed its condolences to Nophemba’s family, friends and colleagues across the country.
Gqomo was once a senior Member of Parliament in the opposition party, Congress of the People (COPE), as well as the spokesperson of the party between 2009-2011.
Gqomo has taught and nurtured many in the field of communications, including journalists from the local radio station, Khanya Community Radio in Butterworth when he was a spokesperson for COPE.
His funeral date has not been announced. Rest in peace, Nophemba! Rest in peace, Nxotwe!
