On Friday of last week, Noxolo Mnqweno-Maliwa, a 47-year-old councillor for the Mbhashe Local Municipality, was shot and killed in front of her business. The speakers at her memorial ceremony, held on Wednesday at TRC Hall in Dutywa town, hailed her as someone who dedicated herself to her work to represent the needs of the people.

The municipality said in a statement that Mnqweno-Maliwa was discovered inside her car with a gunshot wound to the head. She was shot while parked in front of her tavern in Sofuthe village, Ngcingwane.

According to Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana’s report, this councillor was shot after 1pm on Friday while counting the money she had gone to collect from her business.

Kinana says the suspects are two unknown men who were wearing masks.

On Saturday, she will be laid to rest at her home in Candu, Dutywa.

The Speaker of the Mbhashe Local Municipality, Babalwa Majavu, is urging the authorities to cooperate in order to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice so that the family can find peace.

The ANC in the Amathole region also conveyed condolences to the family of their colleague and urged that the perpetrators be apprehended immediately.

Mnqweno-Maliwa began working in this municipality in 2016.
