Crime stats: NMB, BCM and O.R Tambo lead in EC

Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and O.R.Tambo are the most crime-infested districts in the Eastern Cape, according to the provincial crime statistics which were released on Tuesday this week by the Police Department at ICC in East London.

It turns out that rape has decreased even though it continues to occur, while homicides are high and attempted murders are also on the rise.

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety in the Eastern Cape, Xolile Nqatha, said that although some acts of crime are still high, they accept the decrease compared to last year. He said that the police cannot fight alone, the cooperation of the community and the police in the community can help reduce incidents of violence.

Nqatha said that they accept the resolution that has been made that targets the three districts that have the highest crime rate. There will be assurance that the police are visible in these areas with increased numbers.

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheli Mene, said they hope that this plan to be highly visible in areas with high numbers will help them. He said that they will cooperate even more with non-profit organisations, especially those led by women.

Minister Nqatha was not pleased by the absence of the community policing forums (CPFs) in this meeting as he said they are the most vigilant and work closely with the police.
