The Metro FM Music Awards 2023 were held on Saturday, May 6, at Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, and were hosted by Lerato Kganyago and Katlego Maboe. This year’s awards marked their 17th edition.
Gospel artist Betusile Mcinga, afro-soul singer Zuko SA, soulful house DJ Coco SA, Zuko SA, and amapiano DJ Deep London were the Eastern Cape musicians to take home the prestigious prize.
The winning of musicians like Betusile Mcinga, Deep London, Zuko SA, Coco SA, and Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini at the 2023 Metro FM Awards has been hailed as a proud moment for the Eastern Cape by Nonceba Kontsiwe, the MEC for the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture.
Makhathini, a jazz musician of international fame from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, also serves as a lecturer and the head of the music department at the University of Fort Hare.
While Deep London took home the awards for Best Amapiano Song and Best Viral Challenge for Hamba Wena, Mcinga received Song of the Year for Ngena Noah. The Best Afro-soul Pop award went to Zuko SA for his song Andikalibali, and Coco SA won the New Artist award for his song I Never Thought. Makhathini, the acclaimed jazz musician, was honoured for In the Spirits of Ntu, which earned the award for Best Jazz album.
