The owner of Enyobeni tavern, Siyakwamkela Ndevu (52), made an appearance in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday, August 19. This infamous establishment made headlines after 21 underaged youth were killed in the early hours of Sunday on June 26.
Ndevu will return to court next month, September 2, as preparations will be underway for the start of the trial.
Ndevu faces charges such as selling alcohol deemed unsafe, selling to children under the age of 18 years old, allowing his employees to sell to underaged children and agreeing to buy unsafe alcohol from his manufacturer or distributor.
According to a statement from the spokesperson of the Eastern Cape National Prosecuting Authority, Luxolo Tyali, the state says that Ndevu allowed Xoliswa Duma and Sivuyile Ngamlana to sell alcohol unjustly and to underaged children.
Ndevu was summoned by the police last month, he was instructed to appear at the East London Magistrate’s Court on this day along with his two employees.
The employees were given an alternative of paying a R2000 fine per person if they could not pay it, they make a court appearance.
