One of the two inmates, Siyabulela Khohliso, who escaped from the Ngqeleni Correctional Centre on Freedom Day after 3pm, was located in Libode, while a search is still going on for Athini Nothi Mzingelwa, who has not been located.

According to a report provided by the Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, who visited the Ngqeleni prison on Monday this week, he also suspended ten officials who were present on Thursday when the two inmates escaped.

Khohliso and Mzingelwa were both serving prison sentences for rape; Khohliso received a ten-year sentence while Mzingelwa received an eight-year sentence.

Thobakgale stated that letters informing the victims’ families of the inmates’ escape had already been dispatched.

Mzingelwa is expected to be arrested soon while the investigation is still ongoing. If anyone sees Mzingelwa, they are urged to contact the local police station.

A similar occurrence occurred in the Eastern Cape at the end of last year when eight inmates broke out of Makhanda prison.

However, Thobakgale noted that during the past three years, fewer prisoners have escaped in South Africa, indicating that the Department is performing well in his opinion.
