Gatyane netball players aspire to play for national team

The girls of Gatyane villages love netball and want to play for the South African national team as they prepare for the World Cup, which will be held in Cape Town this year. This was said by Noluvuyo Mahlanyana, a Young Tigers player, who won the tournament held in Gatyane villages during the 2022 year-end holidays.

Her netball team, the Ntlahlane Young Tigers, won the Khakha Tshaka Tournament after defeating Mpume 13-2 in the final. It was a tournament for football and netball teams.

On the football side, Young Tigers defeated Nqabarha 3-2 in the final match.

Noluvuyo Mahlanyana, a netball player for the Young Tigers, expressed great excitement after the tournament because their goal was to win the tournament.

“I am excited to have won the tournament’s final. It’s even more satisfying because they don’t want to play against us because we’re said to be tough competitors.

“We are just a group of seven young netball players. We did not have guards and a coach. We are just the required number on the field,” Mahlanyana stated.

“We are a group that travels a long distance. We win wherever we go. But in these villages, we just play for fun because the tournaments have no prizes. We, too, are South Africans who would like to play for the SPAR Proteas. We can also represent the Eastern Cape because we play good netball,” Mahlanyana concluded.

Another Tigers player who also acts as the coach, Amanda Mahanjana, said, “I was worried, but I am very happy after the victory of the Young Tigers. I brought my village’s children to this team because they want to play ball. There is no netball team in our village, Gwadu.”
