Since the premiere of the new drama Gqeberha: The Empire, viewers have voiced a variety of opinions regarding the show’s production, with some criticizing the producers, writers, directors, and even the actors who are inexperienced.
Veteran actor Mbulelo Grootboom is one among the actors who has faced backlash on social media.
The main character Luzuko Mxenge, played by Grootboom, is a businessman with three wives: Bulelwa (Zikhona Sodlaka), Zimkhita (Zandile Msutwana), and Nozuko (Kay Bikitsha).
The way Grootboom speaks isiXhosa has drawn criticism, with some claiming that it “is impossible for him to speak the way isiXhosa is spoken in Gqeberha.”
In an interview with this newspaper, the seasoned actor stated that the dialect was a difficulty for almost all of them when they first started, but it has improved since then.
“Indeed, learning the Gqeberha dialect was difficult for all of us. Yet, I also started to interact with the people of Blawa and KwaZakhele, where things improved. Despite the fact that it’s still a job, I love it,” said Grootboom.
Grootboom says he enjoys portraying Luzuko Mxenge.
“I really enjoy this role, even if it is both challenging and terrifying,” he remarked.
Numerous people on social media suggested certain actors for the role of Mxenge, but Grootboom claims they preferred an alluring man.
“They wanted a someone who was powerful, honourable, alluring, and outgoing. Someone who can walk into large offices and gatherings,” remarked Grootboom, who has appeared in various TV shows including Z’bondiwe, Montana, and Ring of Lies.
According to Grootboom, he only notices the public’s support for him rather than their criticism.
“I haven’t witnessed any criticisms because everyone I see compliments, supports, and encourages me. But at the end of the day, I still respect other people’s opinions. I am always learning from them,” he stated.
Gqeberha: The Empire airs every weeknight at 9pm on Mzansi Magic.
