Khune: Calm down, Chiefs will make comeback

With their recent defeat, Kaizer Chiefs management and players were left scrambling to put out flames at Naturena. After Chiefs lost to Golden Arrows 3-2, outraged fans demanded the coach’s dismissal. Chiefs were in the lead when this DStv Premiership match, contested at Peter Mokaba Stadium, slipped away from them.

As Chiefs prepare to face Orlando Pirates in the DStv Premiership game on Saturday at FNB Stadium, Captain Itumeleng Khune has asked the team’s supporters to be patient.

Chiefs supporters have not seen their team win a trophy in eight years, which is unusual, and they are the target of jokes from Mamelodi Sundowns and Pirates supporters. Speaking to reporters at the start of the week, Khune acknowledged that things were not going well but promised that Chiefs would regain their former glory. He urged the supporters to give the coach a chance so that he could assemble a potent squad that would accomplish what they really want, which is to win trophies.

“It’s usual for a team that has made numerous changes to lose. Ours is currently figuring out its playing style. I know we’ve been pleading with the fans for patience for a long time, but they must remember that the change of coaches in recent years was exactly what they wanted. Everyone should be given the opportunity to settle down so they can play effectively,” Khune stated.

“We are well aware of the importance of Chiefs finally winning a trophy. Due to the abundance of new players, things will take time. In Europe, the coach is given plenty of time to get to know his team. We haven’t won a trophy in a long time, but the team is gelling. We should start winning trophies next season. We assure our supporters that things will improve in due course,” Khune remarked.

Chiefs will face Pirates in a derby match. After defeating Maritzburg United the previous week, Pirates will visit FNB Stadium with motivation. Zwane’s team has to triumph in order to satisfy the supporters who have seen them lose eight games this season.
