When Pheliswa Nonfenu, also known by her stage name Ntombezinyanya, hosts the Ziveze Mbongi BCM Competition, an essay writing competition in isiXhosa and English, learners at schools within the Buffalo City Municipality will have the chance to assess and improve their language skills.
Nonfenu, a poet, writer, and actress who is continuously battling for the advancement and growth of poets, will collaborate with the Department of Education and MMFAS on this initiative.
The objective, according to her, is for learners to become familiar with literature and determine whether they are capable of writing while still in school.
“I am trying to educate them that being a writer is not something that only successful people do, because the ability to write and create poetry is something that starts at a young age.
“I was reminded that we writers are not revered. I also want to remind the people about the value of writers and poets,” Nonfenu stated.
Speaking on behalf of MMFAS, Mkululi Mbani said that the initiative is appealing to him since it will help the learners improve their writing and speaking abilities.
According to Ntombezinyanya, this would not only provide the students a chance to shine, but it will also give the learners’ schools a chance to shine.
The Department of Education has designated 30 schools where the search for this talent will start on March 8.
The main competition will take place in May, just before midterm exams begin.
Successful learners will receive prizes, according to Ntombezinyanya.
