At the Department of Sports event held in Gqeberha last week, Lusanda Dumke, received the biggest award. Dumke got a brand-new car (VW Polo Vivo) after being awarded the title of Sports Star of the Year in the Eastern Cape.
This lady from Centane is a Border Women’s Rugby player who won the Provincial Women’s Rugby Player and Player’s Player last year. Unfortunately, Dumke was not present at the event. She was in Potchefstroom where she was playing for the Springbok Women who defeated Spain 37-14 in the second test match.
In a broadcasted message, Dumke could not hold back tears of joy. “I did not expect something like this. I want to thank the Border Women’s Rugby coach and the sports department,” said Dumke. Even though she comes from a place that has no sports facilities and a home that no longer has parents, those things have not stopped Dumke who is expected to be part of the South African national team going to the world cup in New Zealand in the coming months.
On the same day, the Eastern Cape government honoured the players of the women’s national football team, Banyana Banyana, who won the Wafcon Cup last month. Their names are Melinda Kgadiete, Kholosa Biyana, Sibulele Holweni, Bambanani Mbane, Kaylin Swart and Robyn Moodley. Each person was awarded R100 000. This follows after Safa gave each player R400 000 last week. That is the amount that comes out of the R9.2 million that Safa promised the players before Wafcon.
