Akhanya Stawuti of Ndevana in King William’s Town was crowned King of Municipalities of South Africa at the Mr and Miss Municipalities of South Africa 2022/3 pageant.

On Saturday last weekend, the ladies and gentlemen of South Africa’s municipalities gathered in Johannesburg to compete for the position of King and Queen of the Municipalities.

This was the competition’s second outing.

“I was interested in participating in their first event, but I only got the chance in the second,” Stawuti told I’solezwe lesiXhosa in an interview.

Stawuti, 22, believes that a beauty pageant is about more than just beauty.

“However, having enough confidence made me tell myself that I will succeed because I have the qualities of a King.”

He claims he was looking forward to receiving the crown because he worked hard for it.

Stawuti says he still hopes to one day be Mr South Africa.

This final-year Mechanical Engineering student at Walter Sisulu University was not the only Eastern Cape representative, he was accompanied by Isipho Madondile, who was competing for the title of Queen.

Madondile took second place in the competition.

“What I learned [from this competition] is that you have to love and appreciate yourself because there will always be people who want to discourage you.

“In life, you have to keep trying because success does not come all at once,” Stawuti said, quoting Isaiah 60:22 from the Bible.
