Teams chasing Luke Fleurs are on the lookout after SuperSport United put a major stumbling block in his path. According to media reports, Fleurs (22) was wanted by Kaizer Chiefs, who are trying out full backs due to the uncertain future of players like Eric Mathoho.
Stan Matthews, the CEO of SuperSport, admitted last week that Chiefs are interested in his full-back. Orlando Pirates, the MTN8 Cup champions this year, are another team interested in Fleurs.
According to reports this week, SuperSport United have extended Fluers’ contract for another year. Fluers was expected to have the right to speak with teams interested in him at the start of next year.
“Luke needs to mature in his game before he can be a complete player,” Matthews said this week to reporters. Without a doubt, Amatsatsanta has the right to keep Luke if they so desire, but their recent move reinforces their refusal to sell to the Chiefs.
“Luke is under contract with SuperSport for three years. We are not required to sell him. We can sell him if there is a team willing to pay him what he is worth. Everyone knows we can sell players,” said Matthews.
Matthews chose to give Mamelodi Sundowns players like Tebogo Mokoena and Sipho Mbule who were wanted by Chiefs last season.
Sundowns are well-known for paying and acquiring players at a higher rate than other teams. Perhaps this is why the manager of SuperSport United decided to sell them to Sundowns rather than Chiefs. Luke is an extremely talented player.
Last season, the PSL named him best defender after he shone throughout the season. Luke is also a part of the national team (SA Under-23). Zwane’s team is looking for players who can help them stop conceding goals, which makes it difficult to win games consistently.
