In the shooting between the police and four suspects that happened in a shop in the centre of Qumbu town, three suspects were killed. One was arrested by the police at the scene and one policeman was seriously injured in the leg.
The suspects killed were between 32 to 40 years old. The suspect arrested is 48 years old.
A report from Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said that the four suspects arrived after 9 o’clock in the morning at one of the shops on Main Street in Qumbu. They hit the shop owner with a hammer and pointed guns at the customers and employees while they were taking money from the cash registers.
The policemen were greeted with bullets when they went to investigate what happened at the shop and they also responded with a hail of bullets.
Two bakkies suspected to belong to the suspects as well as three guns, have been seized by the police.
The police are investigating the cases. The 48-year-old suspect is in custody and is expected to appear in court in Qumbu.
“We cannot live with criminals and feel sorry for criminals. And we cannot hesitate to defend ourselves,” said Nomthetheleli Mene, the Eastern Cape Police Commissioner General.
