Lunga Solani (27), was sentenced to 26 years in prison after the Centane regional court found him guilty of raping an 85-year-old grandmother.
According to the Prosecuting Authority, Solani did this to his grandmother on July 31, 2021 at their home in Mandluntsha village in Centane.
According to the statement presented in court, the grandmother was getting ready for bed and went to turn off the light in the kitchen when she was attacked by her grandson. When the grandmother heard the door being kicked, her grandson pushed her into the bedroom and raped her.
According to the report, the grandmother attempted to fight back but failed due to her age after Solani pinned her to the wall and beat her with a stick.
“Solani could not sleep after raping his grandmother. The grandmother had already informed the family and neighbours who had gathered, and it was decided to call the police,” said NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.
Solani denied the rape charge in court but admitted the burglary and theft charges.
Prosecutor Siyabonga Manase presented the J88 evidence in court, which showed the grandmother’s strangulation and beating wounds.
The NPA has accepted this sentence, claiming that Solani should have protected his grandmother rather than abused her.
