533 suspects arrested for various crimes in the Eastern Cape

Significant arrests made in crime-ridden regions have given the weekly high-density Operation Shanela momentum. In the last week, 533 suspects were apprehended as part of Operation Shanela.

Arrests for murder, rape, infrastructure damage, robbery, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition continue to be made as a result of the members’ strengthened and integrated efforts to combat crime throughout the eight districts.

A total of 39 roadblocks and 83 suspect raids for wanted suspects were carried out across the province, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli.

Nkohli claimed that the OR Tambo District performed remarkably well following the seizure of a total of nine illegal firearms and ammunition, raising the province’s total of confiscated firearms to 17, including a rifle. A total of 11 firearm owners were charged for violating the Firearms Control Act.

“A total of 32 people were fined for contravening the Eastern Cape Liquor Act, and two unlicensed liquor premises were also closed, and with over 800 litres of liquor seized.

“Police successfully arrested 142 people for possession of illicit drugs, and with an additional 37 suspected drug dealers charged for dealing in illicit drugs. Also, cash of R11 300 were also seized.

“Police confiscated 26 kilograms of dagga, 1039 mandrax tablets, 9 650 kilograms of copper as well as seven stolen vehicles were also recovered,” said Nkohli.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, reaffirmed that law enforcement would keep on apprehending offenders.

“Operation Shanela will focus on regular stop and searches, vehicle checkpoints, high visibility patrols and the apprehension of wanted suspects. Police will remain committed to decisively deal with crime and criminals within this Province and make sure that criminals feel our presence,” said Mene.
