City Lads Ladies, a Gqeberha-based women’s football team, says they want to do better this season than last. Sinentlahla Nxawe, the club’s CEO, stated this following the start of the Hollywoodbets Super League season last week. The goal by City Lads is consistent with their performance in the first game of the new season. In the first game, City Lads defeated TS Galaxy, a newcomer to the Hollywoodbets Super League, 1-0 in Gqeberha. “Our goal this season is to finish in the Top 8,” said the manager after winning the first game.
“We have discussed it with the team’s managers, coaches, and players. Our goal in the Hollywoodbets Super League is to rank among the top clubs. The development of Gqeberha youth potential is what we aim to achieve,” stated Nxawe. Although City Lads’ debut season at the top level of South African women’s football hasn’t gone well, it’s important to note that they rose from the bottom of the Hollywoodbets Super League the previous season.
Thunderbirds Ladies, another Eastern Cape team, drew a one-goal tie with JVW FC. Both teams represent the Eastern Cape province, but they share a lack of support that could propel them to the top of the Super League. It has an impact on how they perform on the field, and it will be difficult to retain quality players without it.
In order to avoid trouble at the end of the season, both Eastern Cape teams will enter their upcoming games eager to battle for three points. The University of Pretoria and City Lads will now meet on February 25. On Sunday in an East London stadium, the Thunderbirds will play Durban Ladies FC. When they welcome the Durban girls, the Butterworth squad will be aiming for their first victory.
