This week, the football team from the Eastern Cape, Chippa United, introduced their first new player. Morgan Mammila will be counting on goal-scorer Craig Martin for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to begin in about a month and a week. The Gqeberha-based team recruited the Cape Town player after Jose Riveiro did not use him at Orlando Pirates during the previous campaign. Pirates signed him while he was on fire at Cape Town City under Eric Tinkler.
Unfortunately, things did not go well for him in Johannesburg. Martin, 29, has the opportunity to rediscover his football prowess for which he is renowned in South Africa. Martin was reportedly going to join his old team in the Western Cape, but Chippa United took the risk and signed him. He signed a two-year deal and is anticipated to remain in Gqeberha for those two years.
The team’s chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi, gave Martin a warm welcome. In a written statement posted on Facebook. “We welcome you to Gqeberha, the home of Chippa United,” he said.
“We eagerly anticipate Martin’s impact on the field, and we are confident in his pivotal role in the pursuit of our ambitious goals, including securing a top 8 position in the league,” said a written statement released by Chippa United. Mammila was delighted to have a new player.
“Do you have goals for us? I want goals. We hope that his playing style would complement the team’s fast-paced style of play,” said Mammila, who will begin the season as the head coach in the DStv Premiership.
Despite his stellar start to the previous season, he left Chippa United struggling in the middle of the campaign. He joined Swallows FC to assist Musa Nyatama. When Mpengesi brought him back, he made a guarantee that he would be the first coach to finish the season at Chippa United, a team known for letting go of coaches in South Africa.
