Landile Ngxeke is the new champion following the boxing tournament that took place in East London during the past weekend.

Ngxeke accomplished this after winning a bout for the vacant IBO Intercontinental Junior Bantamweight title against Filipino Michael Mendoza. This young man from Cofimvaba emerged victorious in the contest that concluded South Africa’s month-long celebration of human rights.

The boxing tournament was attended by government officials such as Zizi Kodwa, Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Nonceba Kontsiwe, MEC for the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture in the Eastern Cape, and others from the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, which has produced many South African boxing champions.

Ngxeke, 27, is pleased to be the new champion but admits it wasn’t easy. Unfortunately, Ngxeke was well-prepared and prevented Mendoza, 24, from winning in South Africa.

Mendoza tried to earn points during the opening rounds. Lulama Mtya, the fight’s referee, was occupied because it was obvious the men were giving it their best. To triumph, Ngxeke had to increase the bar. Ngxeke prevailed by unanimous decision to become the new champion following the twelve rounds.

Ngxeke won the match with scores of 117/111 and 116/111 from the two judges.

After losing in South Africa, Mendoza is now fatigued and has a lot of work ahead of him. The promotional company Xaba Boxing Promotions commended Ngxeke’s work.

“The way you learn about your opponent and fight on stage has worked for you. Mendoza posed a threat throughout the entire game. I have no doubt that you performed admirably in your second international fight,” Xaba Promotions stated in a statement on behalf of Ayanda Matiti.

Other fights saw Lopez Maluleke and Siyabulela Hem draw, Qhamani Mhlana defeat Sandiso Booi, and Asanda Ginqi knock out Sibusiso Zingange in the Junior Lightweight title. After defeating Lusanda Komanisi, who had a shoulder injury, Khaya Bhusakhwe was declared the winner. Mpumelelo Tshabalala retained the title he was defending by defeating Athenkosi Thongwana in a different fight.
