Akhona Makalima set to officiate at the FIFA Women’s World Cup

Eastern Cape’s Akhona Makalima will represent South Africa when she officiates at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Akhona Makalima (34) of Ngcisininde, Ngqamakhwe, has been named one of the 33 referees for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand in July this year.

This was announced on Monday of this week, and there will be 33 referees and 55 assistants.

Nonceba Kontsiwe, the Eastern Cape’s Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, praised Makalima.

According to Kontsiwe, the announcement of her name among the other referees is commendable for the province.

“We congratulate Akhona Makalima. Her callout is a fulfilment of our efforts. A young girl from Ngcisininde Village in Nqamakwe jetting off to officiate on a big international platform like the FIFA Women’s World Cup is a pay-off on our investment.

“This goes to show that when you are dedicated to your craft, the possibilities are limitless. We take pride in knowing that she is influencing aspiring young women,” said Kontsiwe.
