Nqatha urges for peace amongst taxi drivers

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety in the Eastern Cape, Xolile Nqatha during the meeting with the taxi associations in Mthatha.

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety in the Eastern Cape, Xolile Nqatha, spoke with the taxi organisations, the Border Alliance and the Mthatha Taxi Association, in an effort to find a resolution and achieve peace following incidents of shooting by taxi drivers in the King Sabata Dalindyebo area and the surrounding districts.

This brief meeting, which took place in Mthatha on Monday this week, focused on working together rather than using weapons because doing so often results in fatalities.

More than five people have died this month as a result of fights between these taxi associations.

Dumisani Bango (42) and Masixole Gebengu (47) were shot while riding in a white vehicle in front of a bed and breakfast in the Slovo Park township of Mthatha.

The incident occurred on June 6, 2023, after 6pm.

Some of the Xhorha taxi drivers were shot this past weekend where they came from, while others were shot near Tsolo junction two weeks ago.

No one has been arrested in connection with these incidents, according to a report from Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli.

Anyone with information is being urged by police to come forward so that the perpetrators can be apprehended.

The number to call is 08600 10111.
