After seeing his team formally hoist the DStv Premiership trophy on Tuesday earlier this week, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena is elated. This followed his team’s one-goal tie with Maritzburg United in their last DStv Premiership game played at Loftus Stadium.

It was Sundowns’ first major title under Mokwena, who was given the chance to take charge of the team previous year when the season was still fresh after it failed to successfully defend the MTN8. Mokwena has won two trophies and the Carling Black Label Cup, which was played for at FNB Stadium amongst four teams last year. The DStv Premiership trophy has now been won six times in a row by Sundowns.

Mokwena praised his team after the last game for a job well done during the demanding 2022/23 season. “I congratulate the players. This is the most important trophy in South Africa, and it lasts ten months,” Mokwena said after the game, smiling. Sundowns won the league title after amassing 70 points in thirty games.

“In order to win this trophy, you must consistently win games. It differs from other trophies in that you cannot simply lift it after playing two to four games. I congratulate the players and I am proud of the work done by the players we have,” Mokwena stated after the game to SuperSport TV.

Mokwena, 36, is the DStv Premiership’s youngest coach in charge of a group of players of exceptional calibre. “Managing many players is a difficult task, but the positive thing is that the players are dedicated and respectful. As their coach, I feel honoured. Even though coaching is challenging, days like these make us happy. We are thrilled to be champions,” stated Mokwena.

Sundowns are currently getting ready to face Wydad AC in a CAF Champions League match at Loftus Stadium on Saturday at 3pm. After their 0-0 draw last week, the match is crucial for both teams.
