On Monday, June 26, 2023, a 30-year-old Joe Gqabi man appeared in the Aliwal North Magistrates’ court for the alleged murder of his 70-year-old grandmother.
According to a statement from police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, Momokete Lucy Moea’s granddaughter is said to have reported her missing on Friday, June 23, 2023.
On the same day, police accompanied her to Moea’s house in Joe Gqabi, where they were met by the suspect. After the grandson was questioned, he led authorities to a steel trunk where the grandmother’s body was discovered. She was fatally stabbed.
Retabhile Moea, who lived with his grandmother, was arrested and charged with murder.
He remains in custody until his subsequent court appearance on Monday, July 3, 2023, for a formal bail application.
